In Zambia, possessing or carrying a firearm without a valid licence is a serious criminal offence. The law governing firearms is mainly found under the Firearms Act and related criminal laws.
A person may commit an offence if they:
Possess a gun without a firearm licence
Carry a firearm in public unlawfully
Keep ammunition without authorization
Use or display a firearm in a threatening or dangerous manner
The law applies whether the firearm is:
A pistol
Rifle
Shotgun
Homemade firearm
Or, in some cases, even imitation firearms used unlawfully
Important Legal Risks
A person found with an unlicensed firearm may face:
Arrest and prosecution
Confiscation of the weapon
Fines or imprisonment
Difficulty obtaining future firearm licences
In serious cases especially where violence, robbery, intimidation, or public danger is involved the penalties can become much more severe.
Can You Carry a Gun for Protection?
In Zambia, self-defence does not automatically give someone the right to possess or carry a firearm illegally. A firearm must generally be lawfully registered and licensed through the proper legal process.
Why Firearm Licensing Matters
Firearm licensing helps:
Promote public safety
Prevent crime and misuse of weapons
Ensure proper background checks
Regulate who may legally own firearms
Important Reminder
Even if a firearm belongs to another person, knowingly keeping or hiding it without lawful authority may still create legal problems.
If you are uncertain about firearm ownership, licensing requirements, or your legal rights, it is important to seek proper legal guidance.
